Pronounced "Bratch", Brač, off the coast of Croatia, is the third largest island in the Adriatic Sea and covers 394 square kilometres. Separated from the mainland by the Brač Channel and inhabited since Neolithic times, the island's economy mainly consists of tourism, fishing and agriculture. Supetar is the island's political, economic and cultural hub and its residents speak English, Italian and German making it a popular destination for families wishing to book holiday homes, holiday houses and rent holiday apartments.
Enjoy the culture and gastronomy of Brač with a holiday rental.
Supetar's attractions include the Sveti Petar Church with its Baroque altarpiece and the 18th century Church of the Annunciation near the harbour. Another of the island's popular towns for holiday rentals and holiday houses, Bol is defined by its vibrant nightlife, fashion shows, open-air cafes and seasonal cultural events which are complimented by restaurants serving traditional Dalmatian food. Brač's locally grown olives, sour cherries and almonds provide the basis of its unique cuisine. Smutica, a refreshing drink made from fresh goat's milk and red wine, Butalac, stuffed lamb's leg seasoned with scented grass and wine or prosecco and Vitalac, sheep intestines cooked slowly over an open fire, are amongst the local specialities. Bolski Plavac is a popular local wine along with other regional spirits concocted from a mixture of grapes and herbs.
Natural wonders
The limestone and dolomite quarries of Brač provided the Romans with material to construct cities, amphitheatres, temples and palaces all around Dalmatia and the Croatian Adriatic Coast. Vidova Gora, or Mount St. Vid, is the island's tallest peak and also the highest point in the Adriatic. The summit offers sweeping views of the popular Zlatni Rat Beach which is featured on the list of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. With their stalagmites, stalactites, corals and sponges, the underwater caves at Lucice Bay are a visual feast for divers. With bays and coves ideal for sunbathing, swimming and watersports a holiday home in Brac is the perfect destination for a family holiday.
